The Color-Coded Ammo ID™ System: How It Works and Why It Matters
How SCUSA's patent-pending Color-Coded Ammo ID™ System works, why it prevents dangerous load mix-ups, and how to set up your own color-coded 5.56 storage system from scratch.
The Problem It Solves
M855 and M193 look identical. Same brass case, same primer, same bullet diameter. Loaded on a standard silver steel stripper clip, there is no visual difference between a clip of green-tip and a clip of defensive M193. None.
That's not a minor inconvenience — it's a real operational problem. The wrong load in the wrong situation has real consequences. And it gets worse at scale: when you're storing thousands of rounds across multiple load types, the chance of a mix-up compounds with every can you fill.
The SCUSA Color-Coded Ammo ID™ System eliminates this problem permanently. One clip color per load type. Always.
Olive Drab — M855 green-tip · Long range · Steel core penetrator
Black — M193 duty · Defensive loads · Mission-ready
Range Orange — M193 training · Bulk ammo · Range days
Why These Three Colors
The three colors weren't chosen arbitrarily. Each was selected for maximum distinction from the others under varied lighting conditions — including low light, red-lens flashlight, and the inside of a dark storage room.
Military heritage color. Immediately associated with duty/mil-spec loads. Maps to M855 — the NATO standard 62gr steel core round.
Best for: Long range, barrier defeat, duty stockpile
High contrast, unmistakable in any light. Maps to M193 duty and defensive loads — the rounds you stake your life on.
Best for: Home defense, CQB, vetted defensive stock
Safety-orange visibility. Can't be mistaken for a duty load. Maps to M193 training ammo — bulk, expendable, clearly marked.
Best for: Training, range days, bulk practice ammo
Patent-Pending — What That Means
The Color-Coded Ammo ID™ System is patent-pending. This isn't just a color scheme — it's a systematized approach to ammunition identification that assigns specific color designations to specific load categories across a complete storage and loading ecosystem. No one else makes this.
- Clip color = load type, enforced at the loading station
- Can label matches clip color — visual ID at the shelf level
- Consistent color across all SCUSA products — every clip, every kit
- Works in low light — colors are distinct under red-lens conditions
- Works for non-shooters — anyone can retrieve the right load without training
How to Set Up Your System
Building your color-coded system takes one setup session. After that it runs itself.
| Step | Action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Assign one color per load type in your inventory | OD = M855, Black = duty M193, Orange = training M193 |
| 2 | Load all M855 onto Olive Drab clips first | One session, one color, no mixing |
| 3 | Store in labeled AC50C cans — one load per can | Shelf-level ID matches clip-level ID |
| 4 | Repeat for Black and Range Orange | Full system built — never mix clips between sessions |
| 5 | Load mags with StripLULA — color tells you what's loading | Zero-thought load ID at every stage of the system |

The System Across Every SCUSA Product
The Color-Coded Ammo ID™ System runs through every product SCUSA makes. It's not a feature — it's the foundation.
| Product | Role in the System |
|---|---|
| SCUSA Polymer Stripper Clips | The color carrier — OD / Black / Orange maps to load type |
| SLB Gen2 Loading Block | Loads clips at the station — one color per session enforces the system |
| Maglula StripLULA | Strips clips into mags — color ID carries through to the magazine |
| MTM AC50C Ammo Can | Storage container — one load per can, labeled to match clip color |
| Desiccare Desiccant | Protects the stored system — keeps the color-coded stockpile viable indefinitely |

Can I assign different loads to the colors?
You can — the system works however you set it up. But we strongly recommend following the SCUSA standard assignments. If you ever hand off your system to someone else, or reference a SCUSA guide, the standard color mapping will match what you've built.
Does the color ID work in complete darkness?
With a red-lens flashlight, yes — all three colors remain visually distinct. In complete darkness, the clip texture and can label provide secondary ID. For pitch-black retrieval, label your cans on both the front face and the lid so any orientation gives you a readable label.
What if I have a load type that doesn't fit the three categories?
The three SCUSA colors cover the three most common 5.56 load categories. For specialty loads — subsonic, frangible, tracer — use a different storage container or a dedicated label system alongside your color-coded cans. Don't introduce a fourth color into the SCUSA system — it defeats the immediate-recognition benefit.
Is the Color-Coded Ammo ID™ System available for other calibers?
Currently SCUSA's polymer stripper clips are purpose-built for 5.56 NATO / .223 Remington. The Color-Coded Ammo ID™ System is specific to that platform. Other calibers are not currently supported.
