M855 vs M193: Which Load Gets Which Clip, and Why It Matters

The ballistic and tactical differences between the two most common 5.56 loads — and how SCUSA prevents dangerous mix-ups between your duty, training, and long-range ammunition.

Two Loads. Two Missions. One Mix-Up Can Matter.

M855 and M193 are the two most common 5.56 / .223 loads in the US. They look nearly identical — same brass case, same primer, same bullet diameter. But they perform differently, penetrate differently, and in some situations, that difference matters.

Grabbing the wrong load under stress isn't a hypothetical. It happens when rounds are stored loose, when clips all look the same, and when labels get ignored in the dark. The SCUSA Color-Coded Ammo ID™ System solves this permanently — one clip color per load type, so you always know what you're loading.

The SCUSA assignment
  • Olive Drab clips → M855 green-tip (long range, steel core)
  • Black clips → M193 duty and defensive loads
  • Range Orange clips → M193 training and range loads

M855 — The Green Tip Explained

M855 is the US military's standard 5.56 NATO round, designated SS109 under NATO standards. The green-painted tip identifies the steel penetrator core — a hardened steel tip over a lead core. That steel tip gives M855 superior penetration through barriers, helmets, and body armor at range.

M855 characteristics
  • 62 grain with steel penetrator core
  • Better barrier penetration than M193
  • Optimized for 1:7 twist barrels (standard military twist)
  • Less reliable fragmentation at close range than M193
  • Restricted in some jurisdictions due to armor-piercing classification

M855 is the right choice for long-range work, barrier defeat, and mil-spec compliance. It's NOT the first choice for defensive use at close range where fragmentation matters more than penetration.

M193 — The Original 5.56 Load

M193 predates M855 and was the original US military 5.56 load. At 55 grains with an all-lead core and copper jacket, it moves faster than M855 out of the same barrel and fragments more reliably at close range — making it a better choice for CQB and defensive applications.

M193 characteristics
  • 55 grain, all-lead core with copper jacket
  • Higher muzzle velocity than M855
  • More reliable fragmentation at CQB distances
  • Works well in both 1:7 and 1:9 twist barrels
  • Generally more available and lower cost than M855

M193 is the right choice for defensive use, range training, and general-purpose shooting. It's what most shooters run the most of — which is exactly why it gets two clip colors in the SCUSA system: Black for duty/defensive loads, Range Orange for training.

Why Two Colors for M193?

M193 is M193 — same ballistics whether it's your duty ammo or your range bulk pack. So why does SCUSA use two different clip colors for it?

Because the quality and intended use of your M193 matters. Your defensive M193 — premium brass, quality-controlled, stored carefully — should never get mixed with your bulk range M193. They may perform identically on the range, but you need absolute certainty about which magazine has your vetted defensive load.

The two-color M193 system

Black = Duty / defensive M193. Premium, vetted, mission-ready.
Range Orange = Training M193. Bulk, practice, expendable.

Which Barrel Twist Do You Have?

Both M855 and M193 work in any modern AR-15, but twist rate affects stability:

Twist Rate Best For Notes
1:7 M855, heavy bullets (77gr+) Standard military twist. Works fine with M193.
1:8 Both M855 and M193 Best all-around twist for mixed loads.
1:9 M193, lighter bullets May under-stabilize M855 at longer ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I shoot M855 through any AR-15?

Yes, with one exception: some states and municipalities restrict M855 due to its steel penetrator core and armor-piercing classification. Check your local laws. Ballistically, M855 runs fine in any modern AR-15 with a 1:7, 1:8, or 1:9 twist barrel.

Is M193 better for home defense than M855?

Generally yes — M193 fragments more reliably at close range, which is what you want in a defensive scenario. M855's steel core increases the risk of over-penetration through barriers. Most home defense recommendations favor M193 or purpose-built defensive loads over M855.

Why does M855 have a green tip?

The green paint identifies the steel penetrator core. It's a NATO standardization marker, not a decorative feature. Not all green-tip ammo is M855 — some manufacturers use green tips for other loads — but M855 is always green-tipped.

Can I store M855 and M193 in the same ammo can?

You can, but you shouldn't. Mixed cans eliminate your ability to quickly identify what you're grabbing. The entire point of the SCUSA system is one load type per can, one clip color per load — so retrieval is instant and error-free.
