Desiccant for Ammo Storage: The Complete Guide to Keeping Your 5.56 Dry
Which desiccant works best for long-term 5.56 ammo storage, how much you need per can, when to replace it, and why Desiccare is the right choice for a serious storage system.
Moisture Is the Only Variable That Kills Stored Ammo
Brass-cased 5.56 ammunition stored in an airtight container lasts 50+ years. The brass, lead, and copper are chemically stable for decades. What degrades is the propellant powder and primer compound — both are sensitive to moisture. A sealed container without desiccant traps whatever humidity was present at the time of sealing. Over years, that residual moisture works on your primer compounds.
Desiccant eliminates this variable. One pack per can, replaced every 2–3 years. It's the only consumable in the entire SCUSA storage system — and the only maintenance task that stands between your ammunition and long-term degradation.
Recommended: Desiccare silica gel desiccant
Amount per AC50C can: 1/2 unit pack
Replacement interval: Every 2–3 years or when indicator changes
Cost per pack: Under $3
Made in: USA
How Desiccant Works
Desiccant is a hygroscopic material — it actively absorbs moisture from the air around it. Sealed inside an airtight ammo can, it absorbs the residual humidity that was trapped at the time of sealing, then continues to absorb any micro-infiltration that occurs over time through minor seal imperfections.
Silica gel is the most common desiccant type for ammo storage. It absorbs moisture efficiently, is chemically inert (it won't react with brass or primer compounds), and includes color-indicator beads that change color when saturated — so you know exactly when to replace it without guessing.
Desiccare vs Generic Silica Gel — Why It Matters
Not all desiccant is created equal. Generic silica gel bags from Amazon or hardware stores vary in quality, capacity, and indicator reliability. For serious long-term ammo storage, Desiccare is the standard — it's what's included in the SCUSA ARMORY MAX kit and what the military uses for ammunition storage.
| Feature | Desiccare | Generic Silica Gel |
|---|---|---|
| Made in USA | ✅ Yes | ⚠️ Usually China |
| Color indicator | ✅ Reliable — blue to pink | ⚠️ Varies by brand |
| Absorption capacity | ✅ High — rated for sealed containers | ⚠️ Varies — often lower grade |
| Chemically inert | ✅ Yes — safe with brass and primers | ✅ Generally yes |
| Rechargeable | ✅ Yes — oven at 250°F for 2 hours | ⚠️ Some are, some aren't |
| Military specification | ✅ Mil-spec rated | ❌ No |
Generic desiccant from overseas often has unreliable color indicators — the beads change color inconsistently or not at all when saturated. If your indicator doesn't work, you have no way of knowing whether your desiccant is still active. For long-term storage where you're not opening the can for 2–3 years, an unreliable indicator means your ammo may have been sitting in a humid environment without you knowing. Desiccare's indicator is reliable. That's why it's the only desiccant in the SCUSA system.
How Much Desiccant Per Can
For a standard MTM AC50C ammo can, one Desiccare 1/2 unit pack is the correct amount. More isn't better — an oversized pack wastes capacity and creates pressure on the seal. One pack per can, every time.
| Container | Desiccare Pack Size | Quantity |
|---|---|---|
| MTM AC50C (50 cal size) | 1/2 unit pack | 1 per can |
| USGI M2A2 steel can | 1/2 unit pack | 1 per can |
| MTM 30 cal size can | 1/4 unit pack | 1 per can |
| Gun safe (large) | 750g canister | 1 per safe |
Where to Place the Desiccant in the Can
Drop the desiccant pack on top of the loaded clips before sealing — not underneath, not mixed in. On top means it's the first thing you see when you open the can for inspection, and it sits in the air space above the rounds where it's most effective at absorbing residual humidity.
How to Read the Indicator
Desiccare silica gel includes color-indicator beads visible through the pack:
Check the indicator annually when you open each can for inspection. If it's still blue — close it back up. If it's pink — swap the pack and reseal. That's the entire maintenance protocol.
Can You Recharge Used Desiccant?
Yes — Desiccare silica gel is rechargeable. Place saturated packs in an oven at 250°F for 2 hours and they return to full absorption capacity. The color indicator resets to blue when fully recharged.
Recharging works and saves money at scale. But for a 4–6 can reserve, fresh replacement packs cost under $3 each — the time and energy cost of recharging rarely justifies it for small setups. For larger reserves of 20+ cans, recharging makes more economic sense. Either approach is valid — consistency matters more than which method you choose.
The Full Annual Maintenance Checklist
Once a year, open each can and run through this 3-step check. Total time: 2–3 minutes per can.
- Check the desiccant indicator — blue = good, pink = replace
- Inspect the gasket — press firmly, should spring back immediately
- Check the label — replace if faded or illegible
Reseal and return to the shelf. Set a calendar reminder for the same date next year. That's all the maintenance a properly built SCUSA storage system requires.

What is the best desiccant for ammo storage?
Desiccare silica gel desiccant is the best choice for long-term 5.56 ammo storage. It's made in the USA, mil-spec rated, includes a reliable color indicator, and is rechargeable. One 1/2 unit pack per MTM AC50C can is the correct amount for a properly sealed 5.56 storage system.
How often should I replace desiccant in ammo cans?
Every 2–3 years under normal conditions, or whenever the color indicator changes from blue to pink. Check annually when you open each can for inspection. If it's still blue, reseal and move on. If it's pink, swap the pack before resealing.
Can I use silica gel cat litter as desiccant for ammo?
Technically yes — silica gel cat litter is the same material and will absorb moisture. The practical problem is that it lacks a reliable color indicator, comes in bulk quantities that are hard to portion correctly, and has no consistent quality standard. For a storage system you're trusting for years, purpose-made desiccant packs with reliable indicators are the right tool.
Do I need desiccant if my ammo is factory sealed?
Factory-sealed cardboard boxes are not airtight. They allow moisture exchange with the environment. Once you open them and transfer rounds to an ammo can, you're creating a new sealed environment — and whatever humidity was in that environment when you sealed the can is now trapped inside with your ammo. Desiccant eliminates that trapped moisture.
Is Desiccare the same as the desiccant the military uses?
Desiccare produces mil-spec silica gel desiccant that meets military specifications for sealed ammunition storage. It's not a military surplus product — it's a purpose-manufactured civilian product built to the same standard. This is why it's included in the SCUSA ARMORY MAX kit and recommended for the complete SCUSA storage system.
Where can I buy Desiccare desiccant?
SCUSA sells Desiccare 1/2 unit packs in a 20-pack — enough for 20 AC50C cans. It's also included in the ARMORY MAX kit along with an AC50C ammo can, SLB Gen2, StripLULA, and all three clip colors.
